is it legal to use a writing software which is licensed for noncommercial use to write a novel?
I bought this Microsoft Office Home and Student program about two weeks ago. Microsoft word, a word-processing software, writing software, is one of the program I use most. Anyway, I just thought of something. This version of Microsoft Word is a program which is licensed for noncommercial use. And well… I’m an author. Can I write my novel in this program? Does writing a novel included in "commercial business activities"? Because I already have a publisher, already have my own loyal readers. So, chances are I will gain some money if this book released. But is writing a novel can be included in business activity? Thank you for your answer
by that, they mean that COMPANIES (you’re an individual) shouldn’t use it

By commercial use, they are talking about a business corporation.
You can use Microsoft Word to write your novel without any fear of repercussions.

I’m not a lawyer, but based on my understanding, any activity that can result in gaining profit in which normally money will be considered as commercial activity

It is not illegal. By commercial use, they mean for use within a company. For example, the company where I work has over 1000 forms that were all made using Word (commercially licensed).

Wow seriously? It’s fine because of two reasons.
1. It’s Microsoft, they could care less because they need no more money.
2. Just words on a paper. Word just happens to be the easiest to format it with. If you get it published, they will change the format, or they will use their version of word.

Commercial use would be renting the use of the software–other people paying you to use the software on your computer for example. You can use the end product (your novel) commercially without fear of violating your software license.

I personally wouldn’t worry, if you are really concerned then there are plenty of other pieces of software which are free and don’t have such potential restrictions.

If you’re worried about it, download Open Office.

You could write your book with Wordpad and nobody would know. I think you probably can’t write it off as a business expense on your taxes. That’s all I can think of. Maybe it means that you can’t use int in a situation where you get money for other people using your copy? Like in a class on how to use Office? Or if you’re using it in a business setting. But then again being an author that would be a business setting… Read the EULA.
Use OpenOffice.org if you’re worried.

Use it to write your novel! You are non-commercial. Microsoft doesn’t want you using their Home & Student edition to be used in a commercial office environment such as a buisness office.
Besides, your novel isn’t a commercial enterprise until it is finished and goes into publication. Until then… it’s a hobby.
